Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do you offer sessions to university students?
Absolutely. Student life can be filled with stressors and complexities that can be very overwhelming. Remember that studying for a degree is both a challenge, and something to be extremely proud of. Don't feel ashamed in needing someone to talk to and seeking mental help during this difficult time.
I've never done counseling before, how do I know if I need it?
If you feel nervous or uneasy about starting counseling, you're not alone. Some people may find it hard to know when it is the right time for them to start talking with a professional. A common misconception is that you have to be at "rock bottom" in order to start seeking help. While this may be the case for some, it does not mean it has to be the case for everyone. Have you been feeling increasingly anxious and don't know why? Have you been struggling with relationships recently? Are you in a space to start exploring your childhood and you want guidance? Do you just need someone to talk to? Whatever your reason is, it is worth prioritizing. Your counseling goals are entirely up to you.
What should I expect from the counseling sessions?
Everyone has different struggles, so each client will have their sessions catered to their specific goals. These goals are discussed right from the beginning and are worked on for however long each person may need. There may be days where you just need to vent, or have space to process emotions, or may feel like you have nothing to say. All of these scenarios are very normal, but the most important thing to remember is that these sessions are for you and what you need. Be proud that you took the time and space to focus on yourself. At any point, if you feel the sessions need to be adjusted or the goals need to change, always tell your counselor. This is a safe space to voice your needs.
Do you work with people who struggle with addiction?
Yes! For years, I worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital on a dual diagnosis unit, which means I worked with individuals with substance abuse issues and mental health issues. Addiction can be a very sensitive, complicated personal struggle with many external and internal factors. Opening up about addiction is difficult, but remember that it is never too late. You are not beyond help or hope.
Please note: You do not have to struggle with addiction to book sessions with me
Do I need a referral from my GP to schedule a session?
Nope! No referral needed. Just send me an email and we can schedule your introductory session.
Do you work with expats/internationals?
Expats/internationals from any country are welcomed here! As an American living in the Netherlands myself, I have a unique and personal understanding of the struggles faced by expats/internationals who move abroad. If you need sessions specific to finding resources and help with integration, I can absolutely assist with this. I want each client to feel validated and heard. Living in a new or different country has its own set of unique challenges, but remember to feel proud of yourself for being brave enough to try it out.
